Aggies go to Las Cruces to face … the Aggies
I took a quote from the NMSU Official website that, for me, puts this game into perspective:
The Utah State Aggies hold a 27-6 advantage over the New Mexico State Aggies, but NMSU holds an important victory over Utah State in 1960, beating USU in the Sun Bowl, 20-13. Since that win, NMSU has won just five games in the series, two at home and three in Logan, Utah, including a 42-20 win in 2007. It was the Aggies’ first win in the series since the 2003 season. At one point in the series, Utah State held a 20-game winning streak from 1968 to 1998.
We have dominated this team since the series has started. The statistics quoted above are so lopsided your brain probably doesn’t believe your eyes right now. Who quotes a win from 1960? NMSU was really scraping the bottom of the barrel with that one.
Part of me finds the USU dominance unfortunate, because, in theory, the two schools could develop into a decent rivalry. The programs have a lot of similarities aside from both being Aggies. Both sports programs have to deal with the difficulties of a low budget. Both sports programs have heated in-state rivalries with teams in the Mountain West Conference. Both schools have a better basketball team that football team. Both schools have a new commitment to football and have expressed that by investing in quality new head coaches. Both schools have finished at the bottom of the WAC in football since being invited.
You can see that ground is fertile for a strong rivalry to grow. While that could be a positive for the two schools, the better part of me wants the Aggies of Utah State Univeristy to maintain the lopsided numbers against the other Aggies, and aspire for rivalries with more decorated opponents.
