Player Spotlight: USU Punter Peter Caldwell
I mentioned briefly in my USU vs BYU review that Peter Caldwell had played a good game and that our special teams played well. I’ve had the chance to look at the stats and realized that I didn’t do him justice. Here is his stat line for the season to date:
Peter Caldwell, K USU, Punts:23 Yards: 1025 Long: 58 Ave: 45.0 Net: 45.0
Those stats are good enough to rank Caldwell as the 15th best punter in the country, and the best in the WAC (based on Ave and Net). As if those rankings weren’t remarkable enough by themselves, keep in mind that Caldwell is coming back from off season knee surgery.
This knee surgery may have cost Caldwell field goal duties as Coach Gary Andersen has been using the services of Chris Ulinski.Ulinskihas always had the stronger leg but struggled with accuracy. He seems to have remedied that problem this year making 4 of 5 field goals and 13 of 14 extra points.
Having Ulinski take over field goal duties may not have been a bad idea if it has allowed Caldwell to focus on his punting, but Caldwell was no hack as a place kicker. Look at this quote from his bio:
Ranks seventh on USU’scareer field goals made list with23 and eighthon the career field goals attempted list with33, ranking fifth in the career field goal percentage list (.700)
• Second-Team Phil Steele’s College Football Preview Preseason All-WAC (2009-PK) • Third-Team Phil Steele’s College Football Preview Preseason All-WAC (2009-P) • Second-Team Phil Steele’s College Football Preview All-WAC (2008) • Honorable Mention Freshman All-America, The Sporting News (2007) • Academic All-WAC (2007)
You can see that Caldwell is not your typical kicker. The contribution he is making to this team is significant. Your toughness and competitiveness aren’t going unnoticed. Keep up the good work Peter!
